Music Promo Preview

We made a preview for the band to post on their facebook so that we could find out what people think of the production and if they people are looking forward to the production being made and coming out. It shows the variety in different shots and the mood of our production that we will be making for the band.

OK GO sequence

As a group we watched the OK GO video End Love to get dance moves to help inspire our routine for DanceGrenade to do.
At first we thought the OK GO video was done in stop motion which is why in this test the first 2 moves were done in stop motion but then on the third move we realised that it was actually done so that the footage was sped up. So the third move we did in this style.
We then went out into a woody area so that we could do the routine in that sort of environment.
We then shot DanceGrenade on the day doing the routine which shows how we progressed the idea beyond what we had planned before the actual day of filming.

Digipak and Magazine Adverts Planning

Due to our group containing all art students we wanted to do something creative with our Digipak covers. We looked at famous bands and artists album art work that are already out there for inspiration but also something that links to the song title, Korma Chameleon Because a chameleon changes colour and can be bright colours or dull colours we all decided we wanted to do something using paint.

Due to the band wanting an OKGO style music video we had all watched different OKGO music videos and This Time Shall Pass contains shots of them in white suits but with paint splattered on their fronts and at the end they get shot with paint blasters. What with us all being girls we have all watched Princess Diaries and liked the idea of having a board with Balloons filled with paint and then popping them and using that as a back ground for the covers.
Due to us liking this idea we then came across The Stone Roses Album artwork which is paint splattered with writing over the top and other objects such as lemon slices which creates an arty and creative element to their covers.

We did some paint testers using vibrant colours and also Autumn colours to go with the leaves that have fallen off the tree's lately so that their would be a link between the footage and the covers. These are just a few of the testers that we have done of paint and we prefered the one where there wasnt much black space and had think marbelled paint with different colours in with some white paint.

We then got on Photoshop and edited out the black paper and took some screen shots of the band in our footage that we have taken when we were filming as at the time of planning for the digipak or magazine advert, we didnt have the photo's that were taken on the day of filming in the woods. We then put these together and then used a random font that was on Photoshop, as we hadnt planned that part yet, saying the bands name and the song title. We then experiemented with a white background behind the paint or a pitch black background.

Costume/Props

For the live performance the band had put on the invite for their gig that they would be dressed up in Halloween fancy dress costumes. When we turned up we didn't know what to expect but the band reassured us that their costumes would be similar and their faces would be uncovered. The only band member that would be in a slightly different costume was Loui.

The band couldn't meet up for the bonfire/fireworks night but we didn't really need them to be there as we were only getting footage of a bonfire and fireworks.

For the Bourne woods shot we thought that we would add a twist to the Halloween costumes that they wore and wanted to paint the bands faces like a skeleton. I was the model for this face paint tester and we filmed how we did it.
When we asked the band to wear black clothing they said that this wasnt their vision of how they wanted the music video to look and on the day of filming in the Bourne woods for the OKGO aspect of the production they turned up in normal clothes. This actually worked better as they were showing their individuality as a band and because of the autum colour within the leaves and trees they stood out more than what they would have done if they had been in black clothing and with skeleton face paint on. They stood out more due to them actually looking as though they should be their and the clothes they wore suited the weather and the genre of their music more than what our initial idea was.

We didnt use that many props to go with our production. The only props that we used were the bands instruments and a picnic bench that the band will stand on and do various things on it and with it. The props that we used in a list form is;
For the live performance -
  • Microphone in standx3
  • Guitarsx2 plus a bass guitar
  • Drum kit
  • A synth
For the bonfire/fireworks night -
  • the bonfire
  • fireworks
  • sparklers
For the OKGO element in Bourne Woods -
  • picnic bench
  • Guitarsx2 plus a bass guitar
  • 1 drum and drum sticks

Shooting Schedules

Sunday 28th October 2012 - Live performance
Start: 7:30pm
DanceGrenade will come on after the first 3 bands
My camera will be at the back of the gig in the DJ booth to get crowd shots and the whole stage.
The other two cameras will be at the front of the room in front of the stage or round by the sides.
We will film all the songs so that we can get shots of instruments and of the crowd but when Korma Chameleon comes on we will focus on Gavin Jones, the lead singer, mainly so that when we come to editing we can hopefully get the lip sync bang on.
Finish:10.:30

Monday 5th November 2012 - Bonfire/fireworks
We will shoot the footage of the bonfire and the fireworks on bonfire night as it seems the obvious time. The atmosphere is usually pretty good at the Thurlby Fireworks and hopefully we will get some people involved by asking them to dance around the bonfire hoping to get an image similar to that of "Good Time" by Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City.

Sunday 11th November 2012 - OKGO aspect
We have chosen this day as it is forecasted to be a sunny day.
Unfortunately, to film this part it needs to be in day light and due to work commitments I will not be able to help out on that day when filming.
The rest of the group will go to Bourne woods and meet the members of dance grenade there.
Film on camera's with HD video to get better footage
Leave woods when all the footage is taken and maybe more than planned.

Actors

As we are filming the band at the live performance we decided to use the band throughout the whole production. As the band live near by it makes it more convenient to make plans as to when we need them for the other aspects of the plans for the production. The band have personally been wanting to make a music video but they had difficulty creating a music video around their school and meeting up. What with us working with the band, it can be used as an advantage for us to be able to use their equipment and going to the gig but working with the band can be hard work due to us having to work with them and taking on board their ideas to go towards the music video that they want to represent them as the band. When we were planning to meet for filming in the October half term it proved difficulty due to the band members going to different schools and plans that they had already going on. So most of our filming was done when we could in the October half term and at weekends when everybody was free.

The band has an odd sense of humour which shows in these images that they have taken personally and one of our images that we took whilst filming.

 The four members in the band are;
Gavin Jones
Adam Weisz
Loui Parsons
Jamie Cameron

Mood Board

This is a mood board of what sort of elements we hope to include in our promo. The top left hand corner shows potential costume ideas and some dance move that the band could do in the OK GO section of the promo which links to the bottom right hand corner. In the bottom right hand corner it shows images from the OK GO End Love music promo which we hope to use as inspiration for dance routines and the band sped up in the routine or with slight stop motion elements. The bottom left hand corner shows images of fireworks and a live performance. And in the top right hand corner show images that the band have already got of them messing about and on a stage.

Location 3 - OK Go Inspired Segment

Our location for where we are going to do our OK Go inspired aspect of the production will be done at Bourne Woods/Pillar Woods where the band will do a slight dance routine then mess about around the woods and the park in the woods. By using this location the group can mess about without being disturbed as it is a large area where not many people will be about as other people will be spread out in the woods. In the OK Go - End Love video there are parts that involves trees which we thought we could use as an aspect for our production.

Location 2 - The bonfire/fireworks

Considering the time when we are filming our productions, it is around bonfire night which is perfect for us to be able to get some shots of fireworks, bonfires and people messing about around the bonfire which means that we can get the footage first hand and within the time of when we should be filming.

The location that we are planning to shoot at is Lawrence Park in Thurlby which is a local village just outside of Bourne. Lawrence Park is part of the Thurlby Community Primary School. It is a large playing field where they put the bonfire in towards the far side of it so that people can fill out the rest of the playing field.

The Thurlby Fireworks is actually on bonfire night itself (5th November), they have a fireworks display, bonfire and sparklers which we wish to incorporate into our final production.

Location 1 - The Live Performance

Luckily the band had already arranged to do a gig at a local venue. The venue is Mama Liz's/Voodoo Lounge. The Voodoo Lounge (where the band is performing) is an underground venue that is full sound proofed and is attached to Mama Liz's. The Voodoo lounge in Stamford is a very small location but allows the bands that perform there to be able to get used to doing a live performance in front of people even if it is just to their friends/family. These images are from the Voodoo Lounge website of previous bands that have performed there but it shows the location and the stage set up and the lighting that the venue provide.
The band had an advertisement on the Website saying what other bands are there performing with them and telling people how much it will be for them to enter the venue on the night or in advance. This location can help towards our performance aspect of the production as the band already have the instruments, the venue already has lighting and the stage, all we need to do now is film at the live performance which we did so on the 28th October 2012.

This screen shot shows that the band invited people that they know through the social networking site Facebook. This meant that the band that the band could have people pre pay for their tickets and also publicise the bands gig. Within the description the band suggest about how the band will be dressing up in Fancy Dress Halloween costumes. We got in contact with the band to see if their faces will be seen and the band replied to say that their faces would be seen but they may have some basic face paints on. The band had organised this gig before we decided to use them as our choice of song for our music promo which was lucky as we could then film the band live and then work with them throughout the rest of what we are planning to do for the promo. We hope that with these costumes that they are wearing for their gig that we can use them in the rest of the production if it is possible to keep a link throughout the whole promo.

Stop Motion

We did some tests of how stop motions is done. We filmed/used the burst mode on a camera to take multiple photos in one go.

The first test that me did was each move done on burst/sports mode which worked well but the two within the test moved or me and another member from the group moved the camera or tripod. When we looked back at the footage we realised that Emily and Lucy were stood before hand for a bit and afterwards just standing still which meant that we had to edit most of it out and it became time consuming.
On test two we put it onto the same mode but did the routine all through  instead of stoping and starting so it only took 2 shots to do the full routine. This was more successful so when we come to do our stop motion part of the production we will do it in this sort of way.

Inspirations

There are many music promos that are already available with lots of different ideas that we could do but when we were thinking of ideas for our pitch we decided on some ideas and found some other music promos that gave us some inspiration.

Ok Go- End Love is all based on stop motion. We liked this because of its originality and how it can give us a bit of a challenge to do a stop motion themed music video. When we do our music promo though it wouldn't just consist of stop motion throughout the whole video, it would be broken up by having a live performance and a campfire/fireworks scene mixed into it all. The stop motion will consist of the band messing about or doing a dance routine that is in time with the music and can be filmed using stop motion. In the End Love video they wear bright clothing that makes them stand out against all backgrounds which made us think of what sort of costumes we could have for the band to wear throughout these shots within the promo.
Dario G-Sunchyme is a music video that is based in the African plains and has people dressed in extravagant animal costumes that are animals from this setting. The costumes involve head to toe body paint including headdresses and some clothing over the body. This gave us as a group inspiration for costumes and maybe some moves that the band could do for the stop motion part of the video. By wearing costumes similar to this then it allows the band to be seen, to be creative with themselves and the music video and also, to make the video slightly different to what others may produce.
Owl City feat Carley Rae Jepsen - Good Times gave us inspiration for what we could do for the firework/campfire scene. Throughout this video you see two groups of people heading towards a destination that ends up being the same one in the woods with a cabin. The two groups of people are meeting each other there and have a campfire party. They are all dancing about in the woods with a campfire in the middle of everyone having a good time. This links to the genre that our song is which us as a group is a fun genre and the band are a group of fun lads. Because of the time that we are filming (around bonfire night) we would be able to get some really good shots of fire works and bonfire shots with the band and some friends and bystanders around a campfire/bonfire.
Mike Fantastic - Turn Off the Lights gave us inspiration for live performance shots. This video consists of Mike Fantastic (the band) messing about backstage of their gigs and shots of the live gig showing the crowds response and some shots of single band members playing their instruments/singing. This is a fun video with good lighting and different camera aspects for the live performance which gave us ideas of where to position our camera's around the gig that the band are doing. Also, it would publicise the venue and 'big up' the band as we will capture the fun that the crowd are having and the band having fun so when people watch the promo they will hopefully want to see the band or listen to the song more.

Alternative Genre

The alternative genre is split into 5 different categories
- Alternative rock

- Alternative dance
- Alternative metal
- Alternative hip-hop
-Alternative country

The category that our chosen song fits into is Alternative Rock.
Alternative rock is a genre of rock music that came to light in the independent music underground of the 1980s and became very popular in the 1990s. Alternative rock is a broad term that consists of music that differes in sound, its social aspect and regional roots. Towards the end of the 1980's, magazines, airplay, and people talking about the alternative genre, alternative rock became highly recognised. Some bands and song that are an example of Alternative Rock are:
Muse, Linkin Park, The Black Keys, Ok Go, The Killers, Coldplay, Gorillaz

Overall, the genre of the music is something that I feel as a group we work with as there are a lot of ideas that could represent the genre because of how broad it is. After looking at different music promos that are apart of the genre, the overall feeling is of fun and having a good time. This is good because Dancegrenade are a group of fun lads that are always up for a good time which means us as a group will enjoy filming this music promos.

We annoted the lyrics as to what we thought the lryics might mean in our opinion. Some of the lyrics relate to parts of the title such as jalfrezi - korma.

Pitch

The feedback from our pitch is that both ideas could be seen being put together otherwise the people that watched the presentation liked all of the ideas and the song.

Audience Feedback

This is our Questionnaire that we gave round to a few people or different ages and then used some of the questions to video interview some people

We interviewed a few people of different ages about music videos already made and about the song of our choice to find out what they think and any ideas for our music promo.

These pie chart results are to do with our feedback from our questionnaires that we sent out to people.
This pie chart shows what season people would like the production to be set in. Most people said that they would prefer it to be set in Autumn. We can only guess that this is because of the mood of the song and some of the lyrics may make them visualise Autumn. This works well for us as when we need to be filming is in the Autumn time so it is easier for us to get this across in our video.

This pie chart shows what visual images the audience that may watch our production would like to see. the majority of people wanted to see a live performance or people being with their friends. For us to do the live performance aspect we will have to plan to book a venue or figure out whether we can meet up to use a spare room or empty room in either one of our house. For the being with friends element we could feature the band messing about with their friends either around a campire or 'just chilling' with other people round and living their normal lives as if we are doing a documentary of their lives.

Theories

Post-modern(ism) is where texts are created by copying and usins or reusing ideas/images that have been used in a previous texts; often playful, shocking or unconventional.
Within the experimental stage of genre attempts to establish trends...
...and the cannon stage works within those trends to fix them into our cultural understanding...
...then post-modernism looks at those trends, and adds something new to them...
...thereby creating a new experimental stage where the cycle continues.
Music promos could also be argued to have post-modern stage of the evolution of cinema...

There are three different types of intertextuality
Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal music promo is a homage to Vincente Minelli's The Band Wagon (1953) which has also been referenced in Beyonce's Naughty Girl promo. A Homage is an imitaion of a cult movie which is then put into a music promo.
Will Young - Switch It On music promo was made to look just like the iconic pilot film TopGun. This is a pastiche of a music video to be just live a cinematic film. A Pastiche is using imagery of one text to make a comment about another
And a parody is where a music promo take the mickey out of a cult film adding a humorous view into it.

General Theories
Lyrics: establish a general feel/ mood/ sense of subject rather than a meaning
Music: tempo often drives the editing
Genre: reflected in types of mise-en-scene, themes, performance, camera and editing styles
Camera work: has an impact on meaning. Movement, angle and shot distance all play a part in the representation of the artist/band (close-up dominate)
Editing: the most common form is fast-cut montage, images impossible to grasp on first viewing, ensures with the original images to offer different kinds of pleasures for the audience.
Intertextuality: not all audiences will spot a reference, which would not significantly detract from their pleasure in the text itself, but greater pleasure might be derived by those who recognise the reference and feel flattered by this. It also increases the audience's engagement with and attentiveness to the product. Many music videos draw upon cinema and other areas of popular culture.
Exhibitionism: The more powerful, independent female artists of recent years have added to the complexity of the politics of looking and gender/cultural debates, by being at once sexually provocative and apparently in control of, and inviting, a sexual gaze.

Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features in music promos. These are;
- Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
- The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist my develop motifs which recur across their work
- A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
- Genre-related style and iconography present.
- Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
- Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.

Steve Archers' Theory
Steve Archer's theory is that there needs to be a strong and coherent relationship between narrative and performance in music promos. They will cut between a narrative and a performance of the song that the band has made or been made for them. Sometimes a carefully choreographed dance might be a part of the artist's performance or an extra aspect of the video designed to aid visualisation and the 'repeatability' factor which makes it a successful promo.

Jon Stewart's Theory
Jon Stewart's theory is that music video's have the aesthetics of a TV commercial. He feels that with lots of close-ups and lighting being used to focus on the star's face that it sells the band. having visual references that comes from a range of sources, such as, cinema, fashion and art photography.
By 'incorporating, raiding and reconstructing' is essential with with essence of intertextuality, using something with which the audience may be familiar, to generate both nostalgic associations and new meaning - by this he means that using texts that are already available the audience will recognise this as it is something that they have seen before but in a different context.
Also, the video allows more access to the performer than a stage performance can. Mise-en-scene, in particular, can be used to emphasise an aspirational lifestyle.

Laura Mulvey's Theory
Laura Mulvey's theory on music promos is that of a feminist view...
...Because filmmakers are predominantly male, the presence of women in films is often solely for the purposes of display (rather than for narrative purposes. the purpose of this display is to facilitate a voyeuristic response in spectators, which presumes a 'male gaze' one that is a powerful controlling gaze at the female on display, who is effectively objectified and passive.

Narrative Theories
Roland Barthes
Enigma Code
An enigma code referes to any element that is not explained and, thereforr, exists as an enigma, raising questions that demand explanations. Most texts hold back details in order to increase the effect of the final revelation of all truths.
Action Code
An action code refers to the other major structuring principle that builds interest or suspense on the part of an audience. The action code applies to any action that implies a further narrative action.

Tzvetan Todorov
He believes narratives begin with equilibrium (harmony), then moves onto disequilibrium (disharmony) until a new equilibrium is restored by the end.

Vladimir Propp
He developed Todorov's narrative theory
This has a few more aspects to Todorov's theory in that between the equilibrium and disequilibrium there begins the disruption/complication. Between the disequilibrium and overall equilibrium is a resolution.

Claude Levi-Strauss
He believed in a constant creation of conflict/oppostion propels a narrative. Narrative can only end on a resolution of conflict. Opposition can be visual through light/darkness, movement/stillness or conceptual love/hate, control/panic and to do with soundtrack.
Examples of this theory is Katy Perry's Firework because before the song gets into the chorus the lighting is dark and then when the chorus kicks in its a lot brighter with fireworks going off creating a magical feel.

Dancegrenade

This is our chosen band, they are a local alternative band from Bourne. As you can see via the picture they are a fun, bubbly band who are more than pleased to feature in our music video. They only have a few songs but we listened to each of them and decided on Korma Chameleon to use to create our music promo.

We were lucky enough to be able to contact the band and due to them being a local band it is a lot easier for us to meet with them and involve them with the video.

We got in touch with the band to see whether it was OK for us to use there song Korma Chameleon for our media production and this was the bands response...

Yo dancegrenade here.

Really pleased that you have chosen us for your media project. We were planning to produce a music video for ourselves however came across several difficulties, so we are more than pleased that you have selected our band to make a music video for. It is incredibly useful for us-as an upcoming group trying to get ourselves heard by as many people as possible- as we recognise a lot of publicity is done through video sharing websites, such as; youtube. It will be a great device to appeal to the masses through modern devices.

Thanks Lucy and Emily^3

Much Appreciated

Ellie Goulding - Anything Could Happen

Ellie Goulding's Anything Could Happen is featured on her new album Halcyon. At the start of of video it has a range of quick shots that consists of establishing shots of the beach, waves, mirrors and her in a car with her on screen boyfriend. She then wakes up on a large rock as if she has been swept up on the beach but she looks confused as to why she is there but also really weak and unable to get up. Throughout the video it is very confusing as to why she is on a beach with floating mirrored balls and triangle mirrors. Also, it is very confusing as to why she is standing on top of a car. Towards the end of the music video, you see the couple (Ellie and her on screen boyfriend) in the car and then in a different shot them outside of the car with Ellie crying and the boyfriend with his face covered in blood and then you see her nose start to bleed. At 3:05 you finally realise what the rest of the music video meant, she and her boyfriend are involved in a head on collision in the car. To start off with the car accident is all in slow motion and then as the music kicks in the crash speeds up and so do the shots. With a range of overlaying images and the use of reflection with mirrors and reflective spheres, the video is very technical with different effects in.

The theme of the song and the title 'Anything Could Happen' links in with the content of the music promo as when thinking of a car crash you do not expect it to happen to you but as Ellie Goulding states 'Anything Could Happen' to anybody including yourself. Throughout most of the music promo the lyrics and the content do not relate at all so it would be classed as Disjuncture but then at the end of the music video it Illustrates the lyrics. It doesn't quite Amplify the lyrics, even though it is saying that 'Anything Could Happen' it doesn't really show it in a way that more things than just a car crash can happen so it is illustrating it by showing a way in which something could happen but not more than that one thing.

There is a wide range of shots involved in the music promo and camera skills used such as pans and tilts. Most of the shots are close ups but there is also establishing shots, birds eye view, long shots and two person shots. At the start of the promo the editing is very quick showing a range of shots setting up a location and the characters involved. When the singing kicks in the editing slows down a bit to show her on the flat rock and the location around her. When the car crash appears the editing is slightly slowed down but with quick shots in between the shots of the cars hitting one another. The camera work also focuses on the characters mainly Ellie Goulding as she is the main performer.

Ellie's outfit when she is in the car is a normal outfit that you would wear on a drive anywhere and so his the on screen boyfriends outfit. But her dress makes her look angelic especially when she is suspended by a cloud and floating about. Her dress is a similar colour to her hair but also it is slightly tatty which could suggest her destructive death of being in the car crash. The mirrors make the space look different and add a new dimension to the promo of a surreal location to be in.

Ellie Goulding's audience was also taken into account by helping her make a lyric video. On Twitter she asked her fans to send her pictures via Instagram that inspire them or relate to them or the song. This then enabled her audience to get involved in her song and add their take on it.

Overall, this music conveys a meaning of love, death and surreal feelings. It achieves this using different camera shots and special effects of smoke, silver balls floating about and witnessing a car crash.

The Milk - Every Time We Fight

The Milk is a British band that was formed in 2008. The 'Every Time We Fight' music promo was directed by Inbetweeners star James Buckley, known for his vulgar acting as Jay Cartwright. Not only did he direct the promo but he also was the main character.

The video has a narrative of a factory closing and people fighting or protesting for it to stay open. The promo is set in a Mill House Social Club which all the workers from the factory go to after work. James Buckley the main star and director leads the protest to stop the factory from closing down and to stop them from losing their jobs.

The only performance aspect of the video is 4 men from an older generation performing in a band but they do not sing the lyrics that are in the song. You see the band members throughout the music promo but not as key characters. At one point you see the band outside the social club with James Cartwright in the middle and it swaps between this shot and a shot of James surrounded by lots of the factory workers. The shot with the band either side him is split up with a close up shot of the each member singing the lyrics of the song.

The chorus of the song is:
'Every time we fight
We get a little stronger
Any time we lose
We gonna lose control'
This links in with the images that are seen in the promo, for example, the protest, James doing a big speech before they all go outside. The lyrics amplify what is happening in the promo.

The characters costumes are that of people who cannot afford expensive designer clothes and fits the characteristics of a factory worker. The location looks like the rough side of town which can suggest another reason as to their attire. Even the children that are some times involved in the promo are not in extravagant clothes that look like they are worth a lot of money.

The lighting of the promo is well lit but in a dull manor to be able to create a dingy atmosphere of the factory atmosphere and that the tension is building. The weather isn't glamorous but it also isn't chucking it down with rain making the location have a tense atmosphere.

Overall, the song links to the title of it as they are fighting for what they think is right and that is for them to keep their jobs so it amplifies the lyrics.
